2006 THAI-BURMA BORDER { 39 images } Created 2 Jan 2012

Burma is a country of a huge ethnical diversity. Burma has since 1962 been ruled by dictator Burmans regimens.
Pro democrats and minority ethnics have since been object of human rights abuses and armed minority ethnic groups has appeared bringing a state of Civil War.
This situation makes every days people to flee their villages. Some choose to go to Thailand while others remain deep in the jungle or between both borders.
Mae Sot, surrounded by refugee camps, is one entrant point into Thailand.
On their arrival to Thailand many suffer from malnutrition, illnesses and injuries, amputations from landmines or traumas. The Mae Tao Clinic was funded in 1988 by Dr Cynthia Maung and it is supported by donors and volunteers to provide with free health care and treatment to these people.
Once in Thailand the illegal immigrants are very vulnerable as there is non law which support them. Although they are not allowed to work or do anything, The Thai industry use them as cheap labour for cheaper production.
Those, able to register as refugees, are not allowed to leave the refugees camps and to grow food or work.
The refugees organize themselves to improve their situation in Thailand while they are waiting to the day they will be able to peacefully and safely return to their land. (©Pablo Blazquez)
