The Machurreros from Pedro Bernardo walk the streets during Carnival on February 6, 2016 in Pedro Bernardo, in Avila province, Spain. The origins of this pagan festival are unknown. The Machurreros wear wood masks, a military dress, black handkerchief, cowbells, and hold wicker stick. The festival disappeared after Dictator Franco forbid carnival festivals in 1937, but it was recently recovered. Before disappearing, male villagers after the military service, used to dress as Machurreros as they run along the streets scaring children and adults with their wicker stick to bring fertility to the land and expel the evil spirits.
